World Civilizations and Cultures Summer Assignment
· Watch the first episode of the documentary, Guns, Germs and Steel, by Jared Diamond.
· Read Chapter One from Guns, Germs and Steel, by Jared Diamond.
· Answer corresponding worksheet.
World Civilizations will explore the world regionally by examining the geography, history, culture, politics, government, economy, religion and traditions of each area. We’ll examine the most recent period in human history, beginning with the invention of farming about 12,000 years ago, when humans formed the "urban civilizations" that developed into the world we know today.
Course content will focus on five major regions of the world: Latin America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the African continent. Using regional and global approaches, emphasis will be placed on understanding the geographical, historical, cultural, political, environmental, and economic aspects of these regions. This course is designed to nurture respect for the diversity of cultures and complexity in the modern world.
Given the current global challenges of the 21st century, this course enables students to deeply investigate how individuals, groups, and societies make decisions and act in response to complex, global issues. A case study approach that encapsulates multiple perspectives provides students with an opportunity to understand issues through in-depth inquiry, deliberation of their own positions, engagement with diverse sources of information and technologies, and collaborative and constructive problem-solving activities.
The summer assignment will introduce you to our first unit of study, which will cover the origins of civilization and ancient societies.
